I took some of their free modules and accidentally enrolled in their paid Lab Membership, not realizing I was enrolling in the membership. $375 USD on my ccard. Was just charged again as it apparently renews and I can find no information anywhere on how to cancel. Have contact them & my ccard and canceled my ccard to be sure they cannot charge me again.

Formula Botanica - Please do not buy…
Original review Mar 10, 2023

I took the diploma of advanced skin care, and though they had an online platform that was user-friendly the information was too basic and inaccurate.

Let me start off by saying that Lorraine is not a cosmetic scientist. Her background is in biology.

The content of the materials taught in the curriculum clearly reflect this.

My biggest problem is the student Facebook group. It is a free-for-all. Theres so much mis information, that its confusing. The student tutors do not know what they are talking about and often give conflicting information.

(See pic below.) yes, glycerin can be added to an anhydrous product in low percentages w/o preservative and emulsifier!!

After graduating from Formula Botanica, I enrolled with Institute of Personal Care Science with Belinda Carli.

All of the questions and frustrations that I had while taking my course at FB was answered, and I had a clear understanding of what I was doing wrong.

Please do not take classes at Formula Botanica. It is not written by a cosmetic scientist, too basic and some other materials covered is not accurate.

I hope the best for you. If you want to become a hobby DIY formulator, then take Formula Botanica. But if you want to become serious about your studies with a firm scientific knowledge, then chose IPCS.

I got to watch the 4th review reminded me of the American way, use a lot of words to say nothing. I felt something was not quite right.

I saw the site has reviews on their webpage but I came here for honest reviews instead. There are numerous scams these days, that use phrases such as "They do not want you to know this". But we seldom if ever know who are they. If F Bot, want to promote products why don't they just say so.

Something just doesn't seem right.

I will check this out "Personal Care Science with Belinda Carli" that was suggested in the reviews here. Thank you!

Not happy

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Not happy with them already and I haven't purchased a course yet. I signed up for a free mini course thing and they advertised a webinar where you apparently learn 3 secrets of the industry etc. It sounded like I'd learn actual information. I woke up early to make the webinar and it ended up being a 2hour sales pitch. Well it was 1 hour and 50 minutes when I was kicked from the zoom meeting for asking in the chat what the secrets were because I didn't hear any useful information it was just a sales pitch for their courses. Already it doesn't help build trust in them because they could have advertised the webinar as being information about their courses instead of leading us to thinking their would be useful information and learning about being an entrepreneur and formulating. The only advice I heard was to start small with 1 to 3 products and buy the courses otherwise you can't do it yourself basically because you can't trust anything else onlinee according to them. . That's what I got in 1 hour and 50 minutes. I lost time and sleep for this and got kicked out of the meeting just for asking questions about whay the promised 3 secrers we would learn were and voicing my unhappiness that it felt more like a 2 hour sales pitch and I would have preferred that they specified that this would be about further information for the courses. Because that way if i had wanted this information i could have freely chosen to attend. Already getting a deceptive vibe from them tbh.

So Many Complaints I Don't Know Where to Begin!!!!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Formula Botanica - So Many Complaints I Don't Know Where to Begin!!!!

First of all, the "Diploma in Organic Skincare Formulation" (DOSF) does not, in the end earn you a diploma! You get a certificate of completion, which is a lame PDF.

It doesn't get anymore generic than this! I was shocked! I spent many hours completing this course to get a certificate of completion? I get that when I complete an hour long training for my professional job.

In my ignorance, I bought two courses, the introduction course (DOSF) and the Advanced course which I was given three years to complete.

BUT you can pay $50.00 a month for extensions for as long as you want, even though they say you can only extend once. So the courses that you initially paid $2,000.00 for can very quickly become much more than that.

The course materials are VERY basic. There are no modules that even mention cosmetic chemistry. NOTHING.

You can not formulate cosmetic products without learning about chemistry. The closest you come is the biology of the skin. That is it. They throw around words like "electrolyte" but don't explain what it is.

When you ask the "tutor" their pat answer is "research your ingredients". Rarely did I get an actual answer that was informative.

One of the most disturbing things about this course is that there are typos all throughout the materials. I know that many people have pointed these out and nothing gets corrected. And, for that matter, the materials themselves have not been updated in many years.

How is that good teaching? New ingredients come on the market all the time but are not included at all.

The materials for DOSF are so basic, it is really meant for the DIY'er, NOT someone who wants to start a business. For example, there is never a discussion about emulsifier charge which is critical, CRITICAL in formulating a stable product. As well, building viscosity is not achieved by just adding more butters!

It is so much more complex than that!

In terms of the Advanced course, After completing the first Module and entering the second, it is then that I decided that I'd had enough. Again, the "projects" were so incredibly basic I was shocked. There is nothing advanced about this course at all. I couldn't have been more disappointed.

My two study partners and I have all decided to gain our education elsewhere and are SO happy that we did!

In the end, unfortunately Formula Botanica was a huge waste of money and time. I wish that I had done more research as I find there are no shortage of critical reviews. Live and learn I suppose. I'm just happy that I didn't pay the recent increased prices.

Do yourself a favor and spend some time on google looking for reputable sources- you can pretty much learn the same stuff for free.

A Few more things to note:

1. There is only one cosmetic chemist (from what I understand a recent hire) on staff which is why they can't answer complicated questions.

2. The founder is a biologist in the field of energy. Not a cosmetic chemist

3.

Accreditation is only from the EU to make sure they teach what they say they do. They are NOT actually accredited as you and I expect.

4. They offer no financial aide at all. Pay in full or find another program

5.

READ THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS! THEY AREN'T LYING!

I decided to study at The Institute of Personal Care Science. They are actual college level courses taught by cosmetic chemists, AND...ready for this???

You get a personal tutor for the length of the course to answer questions and help you through stuff you don't understand!!! Not multiple people- the same tutor throughout! No more vague answers or being told to google it! It is expensive, but honestly- In this particular case you absolutely get what you pay for and it's worth every penny!

They have different study structures that vary in price depending on what you're looking for. Because of my skepticism (due to FB experience) I bought their ebooks to check it out, which are also expensive, BUT if you end up studying with them they deduct the cost of the books from your tuition, so it's a win-win if you are serious about it.

The one thing I will say is that the course information is intense and in depth, and there is a time limit (but they will extend it for you) so make sure you give yourself enough time to study and complete the course. If you're serious about becoming a skilled formulator, past the DIY stage, you won't be disappointed...

Renley Evp

Hi! I would like to know where you decided to study as well!

Can you provide the resource where you and other students decided to continue cosmetic formulation education? I've been looking between Formula Botanica and School of Natural Skincare. Thank you for the review!

Dissatisfied with how Formula Botanica does business

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Updated by user Jul 07, 2021

You cannot prepare for your module with materials you need to purchase until they let you open it. This causes a bunch of wasted time in the course curriculum trying to obtain products needed to formulate.

Original review Jul 07, 2021
i paid for their course up front with a one time payment. Because of reasons beyond my control, I couldn't complete the course in a timely manner. They gave me an extension, which was impossible for me to complete since I hadn't really started the courses in the first place. Nevertheless, I thought since the program was paid in full, I should have been able to at least download and keep all course materials for self-study, but I couldn't. I was completely locked out of the website. Therefore, I feel ripped off.

You pay but you cant's access all courses and the information is very basic

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

I paid for the Advanced Diploma because I have maid my cosmetic for more than 15 years and I wanted to improve myself. I only made one module so I can't evaluate all courses.

But this first module is soooooo basic, it's ridiculous. Nothing "advanced", it's clearly for beginners. I ask a question about emulsion and the tutors did not have any good answer (it's another student on the facebook group who answered me well). I spoke with other students : same problem, no professional support from the team.

But the things that shock's me the most, is that I paid for all courses, but I can't access all because I do not have time (with covid, homeschooling, work...) to complete my homework (and these are basic homework, I will learn nothing from the first module in making them and I have no time at all !). I explained all that, ask for an access since I paid for it, the only answer is NO. I DO NOT recommend this school. You will be under pressure and there's no fun in that.

If you do not have time (this is a reality when you have child and have to work in this covid situation) you will loose money and wont have the courses.

I saw lake of competence and lake of humanity. I am very sorry that I did not saw these review before so I would not waste my money and energy, it's very frustrating.

After this review, they offer me a partial refund. If you want to take courses with them, be aware : You cannot access all courses without doing the homework, so you need time.

Sometimes life have surprises, but this school wont adapt to you. You sign the terms and conditions and they wont change any of it about the access. If you are making your cosmetics already, do not pay for the Advanced Diploma, since it's not advanced at all.

I thank them for the refund. Still think this school have to rethink a lot of things.

Not all information given by the owner is correct. Requests of how to obtain insurance for public use of the products was negated and referral to their Facebook Page given for further information

I watched two recent webinars which F.B. was holding to promote their Entrepreneur qualification and the Diploma. In the latter case, the director stated she had 5 of the following persons employed at her company. A herbalist Persons trained in the pharmaceutical business, and professional formulaters. These were not her exact words, but implied her employment of experts, pharmacists and professionally qualified cosmetic formulators. During both webinars, there was constant reference to the number of people who had signed up with a number clock for registrations ticking in the background during the one webinar.. This woman employs highly skilled and good body language technique, with maximum pressure sales strategies, using immense positivity, to generate business to people whom she cleverly persuades that they cannot miss the amazing opportunity to enrol. .

Terrible

If you take the Formula Botanica course and you try to pass yourself off as an “international lecturer” or “organic skincare authority” in the company of professional cosmetics formulators, you will soon feel embarrassed and stupid by your lack of knowledge. The tutors and directors are not chemists. Their diploma is not “credible” and anyone who claims they are a graduate of that “class” - good luck - the “diploma” means nothing but that you paid a few thousand dollars

Formula Botanica School Reviews - Buyer Beware

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Formula Botanica is a program written by beginners, for beginners.

Lorraine Dallmeier claims that the Formula Botanica course can turn you into an “organic skincare expert formulator and international lecturer”, “an organic skincare authority, entrepreneur and lecturer”, “an organic skincare rockstar”.

All these claims are a JOKE.

Lorraine Dallmeier is not even a qualified cosmetic chemist herself.

Lorraine Dallmeier bought the Formula Botanica business and learned to make cosmetics from Star Khechara, a professional opportunist who also has no qualifications in cosmetic chemistry. Her claim to fame is writing a book about how to mash up fruit, put it on your face and she calls that cosmetics.

The blind teaching the blind.

There is a saying in internet marketing that “the pirate is king in the land of the blind” - which is maybe why so many gullible people seem to think Lorraine Dallmeier is a cosmetic chemist. And maybe that’s why Lorraine Dallmeier also seems to think that she is a cosmetic chemist.

If you take the Formula Botanica course and you try to pass yourself off as an “international lecturer” or “organic skincare authority” in the company of professional cosmetics formulators, you will soon feel embarrassed and *** by your lack of knowledge, and inaccuracies.

If you are lecturing to gullible people who don’t know anything, maybe they might think you really are a “skincare rockstar”.

The other so-called “lecturers” and “tutors” for Formula Botanica are just as unqualified: an aromatherapist, a would-be acupuncturist, and an English-History graduate who researches breast-feeding. All very nice people, I am sure, but not exactly cosmetic formulation scientists.

Lorraine Dallmeier is NOT a cosmetic chemist - or a chemist of any kind - she is a biology graduate who worked for wind farms.

Now she calls herself a “botanic skincare scientist”. With no qualifications.

She has never worked in a cosmetic laboratory, and no company would ever employ her to do so because she does not have: 1. the educational qualifications, 2. experience, 3. skills.

I have studied a few university-level cosmetic chemistry courses, but could not afford to keep studying, and I got fooled by the Formula Botanica course, thinking it was professional-level.

It is my belief that you need at the very least 10 years hands-on formulating experience before you can consider yourself qualified and experienced enough to teach others. You cannot do a six month course, and then start teaching others to become “international experts”. But this is exactly what Lorraine Dallmeier has done.

When you buy the course and pay all your money, you don’t even get full access to the course. You have to wait for them to release each stage to you, like you are some little child who cannot be trusted with the information you have paid for.

The formulations are very basic, mostly just a lot of oils mixed together. Nothing special. If you look at the products that “graduates” have made, you will see they are very basic, the kind of recipes you find in craft or kindle books. I showed some of the formulas to a university lecturer, who thought they were a JOKE.

There is a lot of incorrect and inaccurate information in the learning materials, which is obviously a refelction of lorraine Dallmeier's lack of experience.

The chocolate spa course is a cheap gimmick - there is no evidence whatsoever that applying chocolate to the face has any benefits to the skin.

Formula Botanica is a big waste of money if you think you are going to become a qualified formulator or “international lecturer”.

And please don’t waste your money going to workshops run by Formula Botanica “graduates” or “tutors”, this is another scam/sham, with amateurs pretending to be professionals.

I COULD NOT AGREE MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Formula Botanica is a joke.

If you're looking to become an actual cosmetic chemist, take the course from the Institute of Personal Care Science. Now that is a real course where you can actually find a job after successful completion! It's a very challenging course- not for the faint of heart!

It requires many many hours of study- it's amazing! I am taking the course now and welcome the stress it brings me!

Today is Tuesday 28 September 2021. I have been reading a lot of that and it could very well be good information.

I have listened to her speak and not sure of a few things. Never the less, this is a free class and I will finish it. I have spent monies on ingredients and you are right about timing. How can you take a class without the items you need.

Tomorrow will be the last class and I still have not received it all. I have also asked a question about timing, do I need to wait two days like Larraine has done or can I mix all in the same day.

And the question stared a few days ago and I have been bounced around. I figure in the time it takes to send me to a new address they could have answered yes or no.

Wow. I am glad I read these comments.

I had some draw backs about this school because not enough information is given on it's page and what I saw them do in the free class was what I already do now in my DIY'S.

I won't be wasting my time and money. I'll stick to what I already know until I find a credible school of chemistry and science.

Can you recommend a better course/books to do what they claim?

I personally know both Star Khechara and Lorraine Dallmeier, and I have to agree with what the author above has said.

Let me say that they are both hard-working women, but cosmetic formulators they definitely are not !!!

Firstly, I am surprised that Formula Botanica is legally able to make the claims they do about becoming an “international lecturer”, and I’m surprised that Lorraine Dallmeier can legally claim to be a “botanic skincare scientist”.

Neither Star Khechara nor Lorraine Dallmeier would ever be accepted to teach cosmetic science in a government-recognised college or university, because they do not possess the required educational qualifications in this field … far from it.

Both Star Khechara and Lorraine Dallmeier have virtually “bluffed” their way into this industry. What the author here said about Star Khechara is true.

Star is self-taught and her knowledge leaves a lot to be desired. If she was a qualified scientist of any kind, she would not be on the “female entrepreneur coaching” bandwagon. She would be making a good living from science. Yes, she is an opportunist and was lucky to find someone gullible enough to buy her business.

On the Formula Botanica website they mention that they have updated the course materials since Star Khechara started it, obviously because they realised that there were some major flaws. Many of the testimonials are fake (which is why they have no names associated with them), and I think that the competition about a free course for the 1000th student was just a big publicity stunt. I have to wonder why anyone would want to be part of something that has over 1000 people doing it - it is hardly very exclusive or special, and it certainly limits the opportunities. ( I guess it’s called GREED).

And, unfortunately for the people doing the course, when the low skill levels of Formula Botanica students become well-known, no one will want to be associated with the products the students make. Formula Botanica is taking advantage of the fact that the people who they are training do not know anything much about science, and because she knows a little bit more than they do, they think Lorraine Dallmeier is some kind of expert. Formula Botanica seems to appeal to the “mummy bloggers” who are all anti-chemical, pro-organic without understanding anything about chemistry. It is obvious that she is targeting this market.

Some of the people who have done the course are now teaching others, which is just ridiculous (and scary), because you have Star Khechara (not a chemist or scientist) teaching Lorraine Dallmeier (a biologist who specialised in wind energy) (plus not to mention again all the other equally unqualified women who Lorraine Dallmeier has working for her) teaching the general public, who are now in turn teaching the general public … how to be international skincare lecturers and formulators.

You simply cannot learn how to be an international lecturer in cosmetic formulating after doing a 6-12 month online course, while learning from unqualified teachers. Your knowledge will not stand up to questioning from experienced professionals.

This is all very interesting and you all seem like you know what you are talking about. But since you do not recommend Formula Botanica, what do you recommend for people who want and need to learn what they are teaching or say they are teaching people?

It's one thing to post a bad review about a product or service, but can you offer an alternative? I would like to take a course to learn how to formulate skincare products in a safe way and this course seems to offer a lot of tools for someone just starting out with a home-based business.

I have to agree with the above reviews of this school. I have taken their courses and I am utterly disappointed and at a loss of few 1000 $.

If you really would like to learn how to make safe cosmetics - even for a small business then I recommend you check out industry recognized online schools such as Institute of personal care science or SCS. Formula Botanica charges just as much as these schools but offers a fraction of the education. It's actually quite baffling they can legally clam to be a formulating school.

They piggyback off of fear mongering and pseudoscience. What I do commend them for is how good they are at marketing themselves.

Formula Botanica

I've been to a workshop from a licensed Formula Botanica tutor, who apparently did all the courses they have to offer. It was terrible, she was not even able to answer simple questions, the skin care products and ingredients were nothing more than blending essential oils together (anyone can do that, you don't need to go to a workshop) and you can buy much better cosmetics off the shelf. We made a face masque and a serum, but they were both very basic and I doubt people would pay money to buy them.I think Formula Botanica should actually be teaching aromatherapy courses, not a cosmetic chemistry school. A few of the people at the workshop seemed to like it, but they hadn't ever made any skin products before, they didn't seem to know much. For the people who had some previous experience, it was a big let down. It was quite embarrassing to listen to some of the statements the tutor was making, and some of the answers to various questions. I won't be going to anymore Formula Botanica workshops and I certainly won't be doing any courses at the Formula Botanica School.
